Cilic ousts del Potro at Australian Open

Melbourne -- Marin Cilic, surviving yet another marathon match, claimed a five-set victory Sunday over No. 4-seeded Juan Martin del Potro at the Australian Open.

Cilic took a 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 win from del Potro in a fourth-round match that took more than 4 1/2 hours. Cilic, the No. 14 seed, was coming off a pair of matches that took about 3 1/2 hours each. Even his straight-set, first-round win was a relatively long 2:32.

Cilic managed four service breaks, with two key in deciding the match. De Potro was serving at 5-4 when Cilic evened the third set and used another to take a 4-2 lead in the final set.

Cilic goes into the quarterfinals against seventh-seeded Andy Roddick, who got through a five-setter of his own, prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 over 11th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez. Roddick avoided a fourth-set tie-breaker with a 12th-game break, backed that up with a break of Gonzalez's first service game in the fifth set and ended the match with his fourth break of the day.

The other quarterfinal in the lower half of the draw is a marquee matching of world No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 5 Andy Murray.

Nadal took a tight 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision from Ivo Karlovic and Murray had a relatively easy 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-2 victory Sunday over John Isner.
