Federer drops set, still advances

Melbourne -- World No. 1 Roger Federer dropped his first set Tuesday but escaped with a four-set win in his first match at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Federer fended off three set points in the third set before finishing off a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 victory over Igor Andreev. After the first set in which he had his serve broken twice, Federer evened the match. But Andreev charged back from a 3-5 third-set deficit and went up 6-5. He had three chances to finish the set only to commit a string of errors -- he had 55 unforced errors in the match -- and Federer capitalized.
