Dementieva repeats as Sydney champion

Sydney -- Elena Dementieva defeated world No. 1 Serena Williams in straight sets Friday in defending her Medibank International tournament title in Sydney.

Dementieva, a Russian seeded fifth in the event, won 6-3, 6-2 as Williams was obviously affected by a problem with her left knee. It was unclear whether the injury would be an issue for Williams as she opens defense of her Australian Open title next week.

Dementieva took advantage of the situation and collected her 15th WTA championship and second straight at this event. She had five service breaks against Williams, including a match-ended break at love. Williams also had her serve broken five times in a tough semifinal victory after posting two easy wins in earlier in the tournament.

The Russian player won 60 percent of the points in the match -- a very high figure against Williams. Dementieva lost just 17 points in eight service games and won more points (36-30) off Williams' serve than the American managed.
