Bondarenko upset earns Hobart finals spot

Hobart -- Alona Bondarenko upset the tournament No. 1 seed Friday and will go against second-seeded Shahar Peer in the finals of the Moorilla Hobart International.

Bondarenko, from Ukraine and seeded fourth this week, rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues in Friday's semifinals in Australia.

Medina Garrigues looked strong in winning the first set but Bondarenko parlayed a pair of service breaks in each of the other two sets in reaching her fifth WTA title match.

Peer, from Israel and the tournament No. 2 seed, cruised for the third time in four matches in Hobart, beating Italian Sara Errani 6-2, 6-0 in 78 minutes. Peer has lost just one set this week. On Friday, she amassed six service breaks in Errani's seven service games.

Peer will take a 5-1 lifetime finals record into Saturday's title match. She has won three of the five times she's played Bondarenko. They split a pair of meetings last year.

Saturday's title match will be worth $37,000 to the winner.
