Bondarenko, a Ukrainian, won more points -- 76-75 -- than Italy's Sara Errani but fell 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. Half of the 22 games in the match resulted in service breaks but Errani got one more than Bondarenko in the second set to claim the win.
No. 2-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer played more to form, taking out Australian Jelena Dokic 6-2, 6-2 in an efficient 56 minutes. Peer lost only 11 points in eight service games and didn't face a break point.
Fifth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro claimed a 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-3 win over Alicia Molik but No. 6-seeded Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak was upset by Belgian Kristen Flipkens 7-5, 6-2 in a match that was delayed by rain in the first set.
Flipkens draws Errani and Suarez Navarro goes against Peer in Thursday's tournament quarterfinals.
The tournament wraps up Saturday with a title match worth $37,000 to the winner.
