The deficit from international trades grew from a revised $33.2 billion in October to $36.4 billion in November, the department's Bureau of Economic Analysis said.
In early afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.81 percent, 86.08 points, to 10,577.91. The Standard & Poor's 500 lost 1.22 percent, 14.00 points, to 1,132.98. The Nasdaq composite index shed 1.62 percent, 37.57 points, to 2,274.84.
The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury bill rose 27/32 to yield 3.715 percent.
The euro fell to $1.449 from Monday's $1.4521. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 90.87 yen from Monday's 92.09 yen.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index add
ed 0.75 percent, 80.82 points, to 10,879.14.
In Britain, the FTSE 100 index lost 0.71 percent, 39.36, to 5,498.71.
