Togo team out of Africa Cup after attack

Cabinda -- The captain of the Togo national soccer team says his team has withdrawn from the Africa Cup of Nations following a deadly attack in Angola.

Togo team captain Emmanuel Adebayor confirmed members of the national team were leaving Angola and returning home in the wake of Friday's attack on the team's bus near Angola's border with the Republic of Congo, CNN reported Saturday.

The medical assistance group, SOS International, said two people are thought to have been killed in Friday's attack, including the bus driver and a team member.

The Manchester City Football Club, for which Adebayor plays, offered a conflicting account on its Web site, saying a bus driver was killed in the shooting and nine other people were injured.

Confederation of African Football President Issa Hayatou said in a statement his organization is offering support and sympathy to the Togo national team.

"The Confederation of African Football is terribly saddened by these events and expresses its total support as well as sympathy to the entire Togolese delegation," Hayatou said.
