In the first round of the PGA Tour season, the current U.S. Open champion stumbled out of the gate. Beginning at the fifth hole, however, he made two eagles, five birdies and two pars over a nine-hole stretch and turned in a 7-under 66 at the Kapalua Resort course.
The tournament is open only to players who won on the PGA Tour last year and the field consists of just 28 players.
Among those not competing are Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, who is on an indefinite break from golf because of the tumult involving his personal life.
Glover had a one-shot lead over Nathan Green, Matt Kuchar, Nick Watney and Dustin Johnson.
John Rollins, Sean O'Hair and 2009 major championship winners Stewart Cink and Angel Cabrera were two shots off the pace.
Only five players failed to break par at the scenic course on the island of Maui. One of those was Steve Stricker, who at No. 3 world is the top-ranked player in the field. He had an even-par 73.
Defending champion Geoff Ogilvy shot a 69.
