Cibulkova fought off 11 break points and six double faults en route to a 6-3, 6-4 win over seventh-seeded Aravane Rezai in second-round play. Rezai won nearly as many points on Cibulkova's serve as Cibulkova did but dropped serve five times, including three times in the second set.
Pennetta advanced to the quarterfinals with an efficient 6-2, 6-2 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro. She recorded six service breaks in eight games.
No. 3-seeded Yanina Wickmayer won by the same 6-2, 6-2 score, eliminating Ioana Raluca Olaru, and will go against Kimiko Date Krumm in the quarters.
Date Krumm ousted fifth-seeded Virginie Razzano 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone routed Sania Mirza 6-0, 6-3 and Alize Cornet dumped No. 6-seeded Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-1. Cornet and Schiavone will meet in the third round.
The fourth quarterfinal has Shahar Peer playing Maria Kirilenko. Peer lost nine points over seven service games in a 6-1, 6-0 romp over Magdalena Rybarikova while Kirilenko defeated Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday.
