Officials said the limited amount of tickets to ice skate at Fenway as part of the city's New Year's celebrations were supposed to be free for city residents but some of the passes have been spotted selling for up to $1,800 on Craigslist, eBay and other Web sites, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.
"These are free tickets that were arranged to be given to City of Boston residents to skate free at Fenway Park, they weren't meant for people to make money off of,'' said Dot Joyce, a spokeswoman for Mayor Thomas Menino. "It was really the mayor making sure the residents of this city get something back, especially young people who, given this is Fenway, it might be their only chance to be there.''
The free skating events are scheduled for the first two Sundays of the New Year.
Joyce said residents had to register when they obtained tickets and spot checks will be conducted at the door to ensure the tickets haven't changed hands.
