Holiday strike possible at British Airways

London -- British Airways flight attendants held a strike vote Monday after management and Unite union leaders failed to reach an agreement on staffing levels.

A strike by 12,500 union members would be a severe setback for BA, which is already losing money this year, The Times of London reported Monday. In addition, "because they are so huge, a strike would bring the (British) economy to a halt," an airline executive told the newspaper.

A strike could be called for the holiday season, causing massive chaos among travelers. The union has 28 days after the vote to call for a strike, the Times said.
In November, BA reduced flight crews by at least one member -- two on longer routes -- which the union said was a breach of contract that has made it impossible for flight members performer their duties properly.

BA's offer also includes a two-year wage freeze and puts a cap on overtime payments and pay for overseas travel.

Rival airlines said business had jumped on the threat of a strike at BA, but BA officials denied business had gone slack.
