The newspaper, without naming sources, said the deal was dependent on approval of medical records. It said the swap would send Granderson, the longtime Detroit Tigers center fielder, to the Yankees while outfielder Austin Jackson and reliever Phil Coke were sent from New York to Detroit.
Also as part of the transaction, Yankees starter Ian Kennedy and Detroit starter Edwin Jackson go to the Arizona Diamondbacks, with the Tigers receiving starter Max Scherzer and reliever Daniel Schlereth from Arizona, the newspaper said.
Granderson, who turns 29 in March, will bring the World Champions a younger outfield option to free agent Johnny Damon, 36. Yankees reportedly aren't interested in giving Damon a three-year deal, but the trade indicated they are comfortable with Granderson's three-year, $25.75 million contract.
Granderson belted 30 homers last season and posted an on-base percentages of above .360 in 2007 and 2008.
