The "Twilight" sequel, which is set to open Friday, has surpassed the former top contender -- "Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" -- and the "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings" film franchises as it set a new record.
"By landing the No. 1 spot on our advance ticket sellers list, 'New Moon' has broken a record that has stood unchallenged for almost five years," Joel Cohen, executive vice president and general manager of MovieTickets.com, said in a statement. "While this achievement is significant, it comes as little surprise considering the film's dedicated fan base and the growing trend of purchasing advance tickets online for highly anticipated films such as the 'Twilight' series."
The Web site did not say how much "New Moon" has earned in advance sales, but it did say, that as of Wednesday afternoon, it accounted for 94 percent of all ticket purchases on MovieTickets.com
