The Fed report said consumer spending remained weak, while employment remained
"weak or mixed."
In early afternoon trading Thursday, the Dow Jones industrial average added 75.80 points, 0.76 percent, to 10,025.16. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 0.21 percent, 2.04 points, to 1,083.44. The Nasdaq composite index swung lower, falling 0.17 percent, 3.74, to 2,146.99.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury bill lost 9/32 to yield 3.424 percent.
The euro rose to $1.5001 from Wednesday's $1.4998. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 91.36 from Wednesday's 90.88 yen.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index lost 0.64 percent, 66.22, to 10,267.17.
In Britain, the FTSE 100 index lost 0.96 percent, 50.49, to 5,207.36.
