Bartoli, the tournament's No. 2 seed, blasted hometown favorite Kurumi Nara 6-1, 6-1 in a second-round match that took 61 minutes. Bartoli broke Nara's serve five times in seven tries and didn't face a break point of her own serve.
She next goes against Sania Mirza, who was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Viktoriya Kutuzova in her match Wednesday. Mirza had six double faults and four dropped service games but still managed to win.
Another quarterfinal pairing was set as fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone and No. 7-seeded Melinda Czink advanced out of the second round and will meet Friday.
Schiavone overcame a poor second set, in which she won only 10 points, in a 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 victory over Yung-Jan Chan while Czink posted a solid 6-4, 6-2 win over Vania King.
The other two quarterfinal matches will be determined Thursday. The four second-round matches ahead include top-seeded and defending champion Carolina Wozniacki going against Katie O'Brien.
