FDA OKs Berinert for hereditary angioedema

The rare and potentially life-threatening genetic disease can cause acute abdominal attacks and facial swelling, officials said.

Last week's FDA action approved the drug for adults and adolescents with the
disease, which can occur spontaneously or during stress, surgery or infection. The symptoms during abdominal attacks include severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, cramps, and diarrhea.

Berinert is manufactured by CSL Behring Inc. of Marburg, Germany.
