Kubel hit two three-run home runs, Michael Cuddyer clubbed a two-run homer and Delmon Young smacked two solo shots for the Twins, who will take on the Tigers in the Metrodome in Minneapolis at 5 p.m. EDT Tuesday. The winner will advance to the playoffs against the New York Yankees.

The Twins had trailed Detroit by as many as seven games in September. The playoff will be in Minneapolis because the Twins won their season series with the Tigers, beating them 11 times in 18 games.

With the extra playoff game, the Twins will become the first team in major league history to play 326 regular-season games in two years, and the first to be in back-to-back one-game playoffs. They lost to the Chicago White Sox in last year's playoff game.

Carl Pavano (14-12) got the win against Kansas City.

Alex Gordon hit a solo homer for the Royals. Alberto Callaspo, John Buck and Mark Teahen all had two hits and one RBI.

The losing pitcher was starter Luke Hochevar (7-13).
