MLB: Detroit 5, Chi. White Sox 3

Detroit -- The Detroit Tigers kept their playoff hopes alive Sunday, beating the Chicago White Sox 5-3 and awaiting the result of Minnesota's game against Kansas City.

The Tigers had a half-game lead in the AL Central Division race but a Twins' victory over the Royals would set up a one-game playoff Tuesday at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Detroit starter and winner Justin Verlander (19-9) carried a two-hit shutout into the top of the eighth, but Chicago scored three times to make the contest interesting.

Ryan Raburn swatted two home runs and drove in three runs and Magglio Ordonex hit a solo shot for the Tigers.

Brent Lillibridge led Chicago with two hits and one RBI.

The losing pitcher was starter John Danks (13-11).
