The Tigers, who opened the evening with a 2 1/2-game lead over Minnesota in the race for the American League Central title, captured their third in a row. Cleveland's losing streak was extended to 10 games.
Detroit batted around in the first inning and scored four times, getting RBI from Miguel Cabrera, Aubrey Huff and Brandon Inge. Guillen also reached on an error in that inning to produce a run and although he did not receive an RBI in that at bat, he stayed busy the rest of the game.
Guillen had a two-run homer in the third, added a solo shot in the fifth and drove in a run with a double in the sixth. Cabrera also contributed a solo home run in the fourth.
Rookie Rick Purcell (14-9) allowed a run on six hits over five innings to get the win.
Justin Masterson (4-9) was roughed up for six runs on seven hits in four innings to take the loss.
