Hantuchova had Ayumi Morita on the defensive much of the match, except for the second set, before finishing off a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 first-round win. She had seven service breaks but only one in the second set when Morita evened the match.
The third set was dominated by Hantuchova, who lost just seven points on serve in earning a second-round match with Chanelle Scheepers.
Second-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues won a second-round match Wednesday, taking out Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3, 6-1. She will meet Magdalena Rybarikova in Friday's quarterfinals.
There were two second-round upsets Wednesday. Yung-Jan Chan defeated No. 6-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 and Rybarikova got past eight-seeded Sybille Bammer 6-1, 7-5.
In the other matches Wednesday, Kimiko Date Krumm recorded a 6-3, 6-4 first-round win over Lee Ye-ra and Anna-Lena Groenefeld advanced with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3 second-round victory over Kai-Chen Chang.
