The Yankees faced a 4-2 deficit going into the eighth, but Hideki Matsui tied it in that inning with a two-run homer and New York won in the ninth against Jason Frasor.
Frasor (6-3) gave up a lead-off single to Gardner in the ninth and Gardner stole second base. Derek Jeter grounded out to shortstop, moving Gardner to third, and Cervelli delivered the winning run with a base hit to left-center.
Mariano Rivera (3-2) got the win by working the top of the ninth. He allowed a bunt single by Travis Snider to open the inning, but the Blue Jays could not get the runner past first base.
There was no repeat of the incident involving the teams on Tuesday, in which New York catcher Jorge Posada and Toronto reliever Jesse Carlson precipitated a benches-clearing melee. Carlson threw a pitch behind Posada in that game and Posada eventually elbowed Carlson at home plate.
Major League Baseball announced Wednesday Posada and Carlson would be suspended three games.
