Petrova, Wozniak advance in Bell Challenge

Quebec, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Nadia Petrova and third-seeded Aleksandra Wozniak won their first-round matches Tuesday at the women's Bell Challenge.

Petrova, the defending champion, was an easy 6-2, 6-0 winner over Carly Gullickson in just 51 minutes. The Russian was coming off a three-set loss to American Melanie Oudin in the fourth round of the U.S. Open last week.

Wozniak defeated Corinna Dentoni by the same 6-2, 6-0 score to advance to the second round.

One seeded player lost. Last year's runner-up, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, defeated seventh-seeded Varvara Lepchenko, 6-4, 7-5.

In other action involving seeds, No. 4 Czech Lucie Safarova beat Canadian Stephanie Dubois 6-1, 6-3, and No. 8 German Julia Goerges beat Swede Sofia Arvidsson, the 2005 runner-up, 6-3, 7-5.
