Mauresmo reaches Pilot Pen semifinals

New Haven, Conn. Aug. 27: Amelie Mauresmo, seeking a return to the form that once made her the top ranked player in the world, won a spot in the semifinals Thursday at the Pilot Pen.

In the final tournament prior to next week's U.S. Open, the eighth-seeded Mauresmo surprised top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-6 (11-9), 2-6, 6-3.

Kuznetsova is the reigning French Open champion and a former U.S. Open winner.

No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki coasted into the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Virginie Razzano in a match that took 81 minutes. Wozniacki is seeking her second straight Pilot Pen title.

Wozniacki will face third-seeded Flavia Pennetta in the semifinals after Pennetta disposed of Magdalena Rybarikova 6-2, 6-2.

Pennetta is 18-2 in her last 20 matches, including tournament titles in Palermo and Los Angeles.

Elena Vesnina defeated Anna Chakvetadze 6-1, 7-5 to set up a semifinal meeting with Pennetta.
