The defending World Series champion Phillies began the night with a comfortable seven-game lead in the National League East, but suffered another blown save by closer Brad Lidge.
Lidge fell to 0-6 for the season and failed to protect a ninth-inning lead for the ninth time.
The Phillies came from a run behind to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth on back-to-back doubles by Carlos Ruiz and Ben Francisco, followed by a triple by Shane Victorino.
Lidge did not retire a batter in the bottom half of the inning.
Luis Cruz singled to open the frame and was replaced by pinch-runner Brian Bixler. A wild pitch allowed Bixler to reach second, and Brandon Moss singled him home.
McCutchen followed by hitting a 1-0 Lidge pitch over the wall in center to win the game.
The Phillies had a three-game winning streak snapped. The win went to Matt Capps (3-7), even though he surrendered the lead in the top of the ninth.
