The Indians' 16 hits cooled off the division-leading Angels, who had won their previous five games.
Justin Materson (4-4) threw 6 1/3 shutout innings, but he and the Indians were locked in a 1-1 deadlock before Cleveland produced its big inning. Masterson, acquired from Boston before the trade deadline, won his first game for Cleveland in his third start with his new team.
Los Angeles starter John Lackey (8-6) gave up five of the seven runs in the sixth while retiring only one batter.
LaPorta also had a sacrifice fly in the seventh, to raise his RBI for the game to a career-high three.
Seven of the nine hitters in the Cleveland starting lineup had at least two hits.
