Snell (1-1), obtained from Pittsburgh prior to the July 31 trade deadline, was making his fourth start for the Mariners. His last two appearances were struggles, including one in which he gave up six walks in 1 1/3 innings.

He allowed the Tigers only a run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings Wednesday.

David Aardsma allowed a hit in the ninth but struck out two to collect his 28th save.

The game was scoreless into the fifth and Detroit starter Justin Verlander (13-7) retired the first two batters in that inning. He then gave up a single to Michael Saunders, who stole second and scored on a base hit by Josh Wilson.

Suzuki followed by hitting Verlander's first pitch out to right for his eighth homer of the season.

Detroit's run came on a homer by Carlos Guillen in the sixth.

The Tigers had their lead over the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central cut to two games.
