Venus Williams upset at Rogers Cup

Toronto -- Venus Williams was upset Tuesday by Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko at the $2 million Rogers Cup.

Toronto -- Venus Williams was upset Tuesday by Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko at the $2 million Rogers Cup.

The third-seeded Venus, a former world No. 1, lost to Bondarenko 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 in second-round action. Venus has now lost three of her last four matches, including a third-round setback in Cincinnati last week.

No. 11 Serb Ana Ivanovic, another former world No. 1, avoided an upset by Slovakian qualifier Magdalena Rybarikova 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and No. 16 Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova, last year's Rogers Cup runner-up, beat Italian Sara Errani 6-4, 6-2.

Canada's top woman tennis player, Aleksandra Wozniak, lost to Russian Alisa Kleybanova 6-4, 6-4 in round one. Also, Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova edged Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-4). Shvedova next plays Serena Williams, the reigning Wimbledon, Australian Open and U.S. Open champ.
