Reds trade Alex Gonzalez to Red Sox

Cincinnati -- Cincinnati traded veteran shortstop Alex Gonzalez to the Boston Red Sox Friday for a young minor league shortstop, the Reds announced.

"The Red Sox had interest in Gonzo and have had problems at shortstop," Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty said. "We viewed this as an opportunity for him to play for a contender in a possible playoff situation."

Boston is in second place in the American League East and Cincinnati is fifth in the National League Central.

The 32-year-old Gonzalez, who missed a month after surgery on his right elbow, has batted .210 with three homers and 26 RBI.

The Reds got Kris Negron, 23, who has batted .264 with three home runs and 34 RBI for Salem in the Carolina League this season.

Negron will be sent to the Reds' Class A affiliate in Sarasota, Fla.

The Reds also announced the recall of first baseman Kevin Barker from Class AAA Louisville.
