Nadal, seeded second, won his second-round match at this ATP Tour Masters event when David Ferrer retired with a left knee injury. Nadal had a 4-3 lead in the opening set when Ferrer called it quits.
Nadal had not played since the fourth round of the French Open in June. He has been sidelined since then due to soreness in both knees.
He was joined in the third round by Andy Roddick and Juan Martin del Potro, who won last week's ATP Tour stop in Washington.
Roddick advanced by defeating Igor Andreev 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). Del Potro stayed hot with a 6-2, 7-5 decision over qualifier Jan Hernych.
Roddick will face Fernando Verdasco in the third round and del Potro's opponent will be Victor Hanescu.
In other second-round action, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eliminated Rainer Schuettler 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; Gilles Simon rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over qualifier Alejandro Falla; and Verdasco stormed past Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 6-1.
Tommy Haas retired in his second round match against Fernando Gonzalez because of hand blisters. Haas lost a first-set tiebreaker before abandoning the match.
