Roddick advances in Rogers Cup

The fifth-seeded Roddick won 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) in a match that lasted an hour and 22 minutes.

Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, seeded No. 6, also advanced, defeating Czech qualifier Jan Hernych 6-2, 7-5.

Seventh-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France outlasted Rainer Schuettler of Germany 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and another Frenchman, No. 9 Gilles Simon, turned back Colombian qualifier Alejandro Falla 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Tenth-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco routed Argentine Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 6-1.

Other winners included Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, German Philipp Petzschner, Russia's Mikhail Youzhny and Romanian Victor Hanescu.
