MLB: Cincinnati 4, Chicago Cubs 0

Cincinnati, Aug. 5: Justin Lehr threw a four-hit shutout in only his second career start Wednesday, giving the Cincinnati Reds a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

The unexpected sparkling performance allowed the Reds to snap an eight-game losing streak.

Lehr (1-0) spent three years in the bullpens of Milwaukee and Oakland beginning in 2004, but had not seen any major league action since 2006 until the Reds inserted him into their rotation last week.

He was not involved in a decision Friday against Colorado, but dominated the Cubs while striking out four and walking one.

Lehr did not give up a hit until the fourth and outdueled Chicago's Rick Harden, who was going after his third straight win.

Scott Rolen put Cincinnati in front with a two-run homer in the second.

Harden (7-7) allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits in six innings.

Chicago failed to take advantage of a loss by St. Louis earlier in the day and remained tied with the Cardinals at the top of the National League Central.
