MLB: Texas 7, Seattle 1

Arlington, Texas July 30: Rookie Derek Holland retired the first 14 Seattle batters Thursday and took a one-hitter into the ninth inning, carrying Texas to a 7-1 win over the Mariners.

Holland (4-6), making his 10th career start, came within one out of recording his first shutout and first complete game.

He allowed a lead-off walk in the ninth and gave up a two-out single to Franklin Gutierrez before being replaced by Warner Madrigal.

Jose Lopez singled in a run before Madrigal could get Chris Shelton on a fly ball to right to end the game.

Until the ninth, the only base runner allowed by Holland came on a two-out, broken-bat single to shallow center in the fifth by Jack Hannahan. Holland's dominating effort came after he had failed to pitch past the fifth in either of his last two starts.

Texas produced five homers to account for all its runs. Hank Blalock hit a solo shot, and Jarrod Saltalmacchia delivered a two-run blast, both coming in the second.

Michael Young contributed solo homers in the third, and fifth and Marlon Byrd hit a mammoth, two-run shot in the seventh.

The loss went to Garrett Olson (4-5), who gave up the first three home runs.

Texas won for the ninth time in 11 outings and moved within three games of the Los Angeles Angels for the lead in the American League West
