Kohlschreiber fell 6-4, 6-0 to Victor Crivoi in 65 minutes. Crivoi converted the only break of the first set, which came on one of five Kohlschreiber double faults in the match, into the lead. Kohlschreiber won just five points on serve in the second set whitewash.
It was only the third time this year that Kohlschreiber dropped a first-round match and marked the fifth win in 15 matches in 2009 for Crivoi.
No. 7-seeded Feliciano Lopez was also an upset victim, dropping a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 decision to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Third-seeded Igor Andreev avoided the upset bug, topping Diego Junqueira 7-5, 6-4.
Other matches Monday saw Teimuraz Gabashvili rebound for a 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Paul Capdeville and Jan Hernych run past Flavio Cipolla 6-1, 6-0.
