MLB: Seattle 4, San Diego 3

San Diego, June 18: A throwing error by catcher Nick Hundley allowed Franklin Gutierrez to score the go-ahead run Wednesday and Seattle went on to nip San Diego 4-3.

The critical error came in the fifth inning and neither team could score the rest of the way, resulting in the Mariners grabbing their second straight inter-league win over the Padres.

Gutierrez opened the fifth with a walk off Chad Gaudin (2-6) and moved to second on a sacrifice by pitcher Garrett Olson. Ichiro Suzuki's single advanced Gutierrez to third, from where he scored when Hundley threw wildly to first trying to pick off Suzuki.

The other three Seattle runs came in the fourth, when Ken Griffey Jr. doubled home Russell Branyan and scored ahead of a home run by Jose Lopez.

All of San Diego's runs came on homers -- a solo shot by Kevin Kouzmanoff in the second and a two-run blast by Chase Headley in the fourth.

Those two home runs were the only hits allowed by Olson (3-1), who got the win by lasting six innings.

David Aardsma gave up a two-out single in the ninth before recording his 12th save.
