MLB: Los Angeles Angels 10, Detroit 5

Anaheim, Calif. -- Jeff Mathis drove in three runs Thursday and the Los Angeles Angels chipped away for 14 hits to pull away for a 10-5 win over Detroit.

Only three of the Angels' 10 runs were scored on hits to the outfield. A series of bases-loaded walks, infield singles and Detroit errors accounted for the rest of the tallies that brought the Angels their second win in three games.

Los Angeles had only a 3-2 lead going into the sixth. Mathis then drove in two runs with an infield base hit and scored later in the inning on an infield single by Bobby Abreu.

After Detroit scored three times in the top of the seventh to cut its deficit to 6-5, the Angels responded with a four-run frame that featured a two-run, bunt single from Chone Figgins.

Starter Matt Palmer (1-0) lasted long enough to get the victory. He allowed four runs on six hits over six innings.

Edwin Jackson (1-1), who gave up a go-ahead home run to Torii Hunter in the fifth, took the loss.
