Griffey -- who started in right field Monday in place of all-star Ichiro Suzuki, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an ulcer -- is back for his second stint in Seattle, a franchise he opened his career with in 1989. Griffey ranks fifth all-time in Major League Baseball with 612 homers.

Franklin Gutierrez had a two-run homer for the Mariners in the first regular-season game for Don Wakamatsu, who was named manager in November to become the first Asian-American manager in MLB history.

Felix Hernandez (1-0) got the win as he gave up one run on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks in eight innings.

Francisco Liriano (0-1) took the loss for the Twins, giving up four runs on four hits over seven innings.
