Madonna's adoption plan delayed till Friday

The ‘Queen of Pop’ appeared in court today to sign the papers for her second African adoption in Malawi but the court has adjourned her application until Friday.

The 51 year old star made a back door entry in the court house in Lilongwe to evade the reporters waiting at the entrance. A closed session with Judge, Esme Chombo followed.

Madonna arrived in Chinkhota village near Lilongwe, Malawi on Sunday accompanied by her children Lourdes (12), Rocco (8) and David (3). She has filed adoption plea for 3 years old, Chifundo James whose mother passed away two weeks after her birth.

She adopted David from the same village during her charity visit to Africa in 2006 and had Chifundo on her mind ever since then. Social service groups in Malawi are opposing the adoption and requesting the court to say no.

“We believe that international adoption should only be considered if the child is a genuine orphan, if all other alternatives in their own country have been genuinely exhausted”, says Dominic Nutt, spokesman of Save the Children group.

Under Malawi law, adoptions to single or divorced parents are not permissible. Madonna has undergone both. Her daughter, Lourdes, was born when the superstar was unmarried and she divorced her husband, Guy Ritchie last year.

Malawi's child welfare chief, Simon Chisale says, "We do not only look at the material issues, but also the moral standing of prospective adoptive parents, because we do not want our children's morals to be corrupted.”

But she is backed by most in Malawi including President, Bingu wa Mutharika. He affirms, “Malawi has over one million orphans. I wish someone had come and taken 10,000 Malawian children because I know they would have better education and opportunities.”

“I am happy to be involved in a case that might pave the way for more adoptions in Malawi. But I will only adopt the child with the support of the people and the Malawian government”, says the singer.

She hopes to get a temporary custody order incase the adoption is cancelled. She wants David to spend some time with her as he needs a sister according to the star. All said and done the final calling will only come after the judge’s order on Friday.
